Following the intensive environmental cleanup of a 1920’s gas station we were brought in to design a new urban infill, mixed-use building for downtown Menomonee Falls. The developer’s goals were to blend in with the scale and feel of the downtown area while still creating a distinct landmark commercial space in the community.
A two-story brick section with separate residential entrances on the sidewalk helped to maintain the size, feel, and geometric rhythm present in the other downtown structures. Additionally, rather than defaulting to projecting balconies the outdoor spaces for the residences were pulled back behind the brick façade. This design decision accommodated the modern expectations of residents while maintaining the clean feel of the historic facades downtown.
