Architecture In Nature
Nestled within the scenic bounds of Lapham Peak State Park, Lapham Lodge replaces a smaller, outdated facility to better serve the growing needs of park visitors. Thoughtfully sited between an existing parking lot and a popular cross-country ski trail, the lodge is composed of two distinct architectural forms that complement one another to mediate between the manmade and natural environments. Facing the parking lot, a nondescript, one-story volume houses essential service spaces. In contrast, the building opens dramatically towards the cross-country ski trail with a double-height gathering space that celebrates natural materials and expansive views. Exposed wood trusses, natural stone, wood tongue-and-groove ceiling, and natural gas fireplace create a welcoming atmosphere. Large expanses of glass offer unobstructed views of the cross-country ski trail and surrounding landscape, reinforcing the building's role as a connector between people and place. Taking cues from the neighboring farmsteads, the exterior material palette features a combination of lap and panel siding, natural stone, and exposed wood framing elements. A spacious east-facing terrace invites visitors to enjoy the early morning sun or unwind after a hike or ski outing in the park. The terrace is paved with bricks etched with the names of financial donors, honoring their contributions to the project. Location:
