GCA was engaged to design
Sushi Yuki, an economical yet carefully considered urban infill restaurant, in Milwaukee’s Bay View neighborhood. The project required constructing a new building partially over the existing foundation and basement of a structure slated for demolition, while the rear portion of the building was designed as slab-on-grade construction. The hybrid foundation condition introduced a range of structural and coordination challenges. GCA worked closely with the general contractor and client to sequence demolition and new construction, resolve transitions between old and new foundations, and maintain project momentum within a constrained urban site. Exposed composite trusses define the interior ceiling, allowing the structure itself to shape the character of the dining space while minimizing finish complexity. Coordination with existing utilities and adjacent city infrastructure proved critical to both design and construction planning. Throughout the process, GCA collaborated closely with City of Milwaukee planners to meet zoning requirements, address fire separation constraints, and navigate the approval process inherent to dense urban construction. The result is a compact, efficient building that responds directly to site limitations while providing a warm and functional setting for the restaurant.
