Patterns in Place

This month, a new group of architecture students will enter studios for the first time. They will learn to draw, build models, study structures, defend ideas, and look closely at places they may once have passed without noticing. But perhaps the most important lesson will take longer to understand: architecture is a profession in which learning never ends.

A degree begins the education. After graduation, learning expands through buildings and the ways people inhabit them, through books and precedent, and through clients and residents who know their places better than any architect arriving from outside. It comes from craftspeople, engineers, and other designers who contribute knowledge outside an architect’s expertise. Sometimes it comes from failure, constraints, or completed work that reveals something an architect should have understood differently.

One tool architects use to keep learning from the built environment is pattern language, a framework developed by Christopher Alexander and his collaborators to describe recurring relationships between buildings, streets, gathering spaces, and human activity. Patterns contain accumulated observations about what supports human life. An alcove illustrates one such pattern: people often prefer seating that feels slightly protected rather than exposed within an open space. A café can become a place where strangers become regulars and community forms at the scale of a counter and a cup of coffee. A public outdoor room uses proportion, enclosure, and scale to make gathering comfortable. But patterns are not universal answers. They are starting points for asking better questions.

The Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee asked Galbraith Carnahan Architects to undertake a master planning and community-engagement process for the Hillside neighborhood redevelopment. Hillside is bounded by Walnut Street to the north, Fond du Lac Avenue to the south, Interstate 43 to the west, and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive to the east. In the early and mid-twentieth century, Hillside was part of Milwaukee’s Historic Bronzeville. Walnut Street was lined with restaurants, theaters, and shops. Jazz clubs such as the Metropole and Moon Glow hosted performers including Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Louis Armstrong. It was a neighborhood where people gathered, businesses operated, and community life flourished. In the 1960s, urban renewal policies and the construction of Interstate 43 dismantled much of that physical and social fabric. Across Milwaukee, urban renewal and freeway construction demolished more than 8,000 homes, displaced an estimated 1,000 businesses, and scattered families and communities. The resulting physical environment was isolated and cut off by freeways, shaped by planning decisions made without the people who lived there.

When the team began the strategic planning and community-engagement process, they brought design expertise and knowledge of what was possible. But they faced a choice: assume they understood what the neighborhood needed, or ask. They asked. They listened to residents describe what wasn’t working, what they wished existed, and what made other places feel good to be in. What they learned was not that professional expertise was wrong. It was that professional expertise was incomplete. Patterns showed what had worked in other places. Residents showed what would actually work here, what mattered to them, and what they valued about gathering, community, and home.

Residents identified the need for more natural ways to cross paths, gather, and spend time in the neighborhood. Pattern language helped the team translate those priorities into walking routes, human-scaled gathering spaces, active destinations, and reasons to linger. One concrete move was an elevated urban park over the Fond du Lac Avenue freeway spur, reconnecting Hillside with the former Pabst Brewery complex and surrounding neighborhoods to the south. That proposal made the link clear: resident priorities shaped the design, and architectural precedent gave those priorities form. When the team returned with proposals, residents saw their own words reflected. The conversation was specific and grounded. Neither the residents’ priorities alone nor the architectural patterns alone would have been enough. The designs grew from both. Although the master plan has not been implemented, the process itself demonstrated how resident knowledge and architectural precedent could inform one another.

For students beginning architecture school this month, the years ahead will bring new tools, unfamiliar language, difficult critiques, and countless hours learning how buildings come together. But their education will not end at graduation. Every client, community, collaborator, site, and completed building will reveal something the classroom could not.
