The Daily Reporter: North Avenue Market Named A Top Project Of 2022
Food halls are becoming increasingly popular across the U.S.
Vendors like them because they can keep overhead costs low. Customers, on the other hand, like the variety and convenience of having so many different dining options under one roof.
So, it’s no surprise that when the North Avenue Market in Milwaukee opened its doors last fall, the new food hall/community gathering space was well received by locals.
The building, which spans over 9,423 square feet, features eight individual vendor stalls, a shared kitchen, speakeasy bar, co-working space and community meeting space. The majority of the vendors are small business startups with an emphasis on diversity.
The building, which was formerly a bank, is a true reflection of the community, offering food options and design features that make everyone feel welcome. Handicap accessibility was also strongly considered within the building. The design and layout allows universal access to the various spaces and levels.
The history of the building and neighborhood are on prominent display as Galbraith Carnahan Architects took care to preserve special features such as the original bank’s logo in the terrazzo floor.
Waukesha-based Duffek Construction served as general contractor on the $1.69 million project.
A niche exists that has yet to be filled for a high-volume, convenient, quality-driven food/retail hall that includes a drive-thru, said Laura Dykstra, office manager at Galbraith Carnahan Architects.
“The North Avenue Market meets this need and fills this niche. The North Avenue Market offers high-quality products in a friendly and convenient environment for the customer on the go or looking to dine in.”
